Backpackers love Bali. It’s an easy destination to visit with a strong tourism infrastructure, lots of cool things to do, beautiful beaches, a spiritual vibe, cheap living and awesome tropical surroundings. Because of this the island has developed a bit of a reputation for being overrun with travellers but you’ll find the Balinese sensitive of the importance of preserving their culture while still welcoming new visitors and returnees with open arms every year.

When I visited I travelled from Kuta to Seminyak to Ubud and then out of Bali onto the Gili Islands and Lombok via boat. Each place I visited in Bali had a different vibe. Kuta is for the party people, Ubud for the spiritual or entrepreneurial travellers, and Seminyak was somewhere in between, with more of a luxury vibe.

With stunning beaches, rugged mountains and incredible historical and religious architecture, Bali is definitely one of the most picturesque and interesting places I’ve visited.

Visiting Bali on Your Gap Year
Where to go and what to see

Bali’s culture is inextricably intertwined with its religious beliefs, which reflect on every aspect of daily life. Treasured practices include rainbow-coloured flower petal offerings, pulse-pounding Gamelan orchestras and dizzyingly disciplined traditional dancers.

Plan your first trip to Kuta with this quick guide, which provides you with a few of the best ideas you can see and experience on your first day. Most hotels here have Bali’s famous sand and surf mere steps away, and the same can be said for world-class dining and chilling while overlooking Kuta’s dramatic sunsets. There’s great shopping along the main footpaths of Kuta’s Jalan Pantai, the main beach road, as well as on its southern part, with the Discovery Shopping Mall right across from Waterbom Bali, one of Southeast Asia’s premier waterparks. Kuta is also conveniently right next door to the Ngurah Rai Airport in Tuban, making it an ideal destination for brief stays. Also, the island’s liveliest nightlife scenes are just around the corner in neighbouring Legian and Seminyak. Here are a few to help you plan ahead.

Bali is famous for its beaches, and Kuta Beach is one of the most famous beach resort destination in Bali. It is famous for its sunsets. After the sunset tourists hit the town and go for shopping or visit one of the countless restaurants. A wide variety of local souvenirs can also be bought from vendors on and along the beach. Bargaining is essential here. Even you have to bargain until 70% to get cheap price here.

Kuta Beach is also minutes away from the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban. The nearby resorts of Tuban, Legian and Seminyak are all within close walking distance.  Once a simple, rustic and quiet fishing village, Kuta Beach has witnessed a transformation over the past years. This is due to the rise of various accommodation options, dining and shopping scenes. The rapid growth owes much to visitors, beachcombers and art lovers from nearby Australia. Expatriates also helped pioneer surfing in Kuta, as well.  A rather frenzied traffic scene has become commonplace here. Even so, Kuta Beach continues to attract thousands of visitors every year with its unique charm. Kuta Beach is regularly fully-booked over the peak seasons. This is usually from July to August and the holiday season for Christmas and New Year. Travellers look forward to visiting Kuta for a pleasant and affordable Bali escape.

Surfing in Kuta

The surfing lovers must be liked this beach so much. The waves are changing according to high and low tides and depending on the time of the day, so surfing in Kuta is great for beginners and advanced. Furthermore, there is no corals that can harm you, so it is so safe. And don’t worry, board rentals are available along the beach in every 20m.

Kuta Beach Atmosphere

Today, a busy street runs along the beach, lined with apartments, malls, hotels, convenience stores, restaurants, and bars blasting music. The beach is full of chairs and loungers for rent and vendors are everywhere. Many local and visiting families with children play in the water, which is safe but can have strong currents at times, and is dirtier than in other places. Kuta Beach’s, small and gentle waves and soft sand bottom make this a popular place for people learning to surf, and there can be hundreds of surfers out on any given day, even if there are no waves. Add in joggers, yoga enthusiasts, and groups playing football, volleyball, and beach tennis, and you have a beach that is always alive and full of action.

Kuta Beach Get to Know

If you are looking for a place to relax in peace and quiet, this is not it, but if you want to experience the heart of Bali’s busy beach culture, or see one of its most historic tourist locations, Kuta Beach is worth at least one visit. Be advised that the traffic here is some of the heaviest on the island and parking is often non-existent, especially for cars, so try to get dropped off by a driver or taxi, or park far away from the beach and take a long walk through the busy alleys of Kuta to get here. To beat the crowds (maybe) come early in the morning, when everyone is still sleeping, but for the full-on Kuta Beach experience, come at sunset, when mobs of tourists and locals watch the sun go down with a drink, snap photos of each other, enjoying this unique atmosphere.
